As part of the Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy’s efforts to develop a realistic vision and design a humanitarian project in partnership with Sudanese refugees in Kiryandongo Settlement -aiming to address some of their basic needs and improve their economic and social conditions-a delegation from the center conducted Primary Needs assessment a field visit to the Settlement on Thursday and Friday, February 13-14, 2025. The visit was made upon the request of the Italian Bishops’ Conference and Caritas Italiana. both of which are dedicated to supporting and assisting refugees in the Settlement.
The delegation was led by Mohamed Salih Mohamed Yassin (PhD), Chairperson, of the Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy. He was accompanied by Mr. Mohamed Abdullah, Director of the Nubian Center, Mr. Anas Yousif, and Mr. Abdel Azim Mustafa. The delegation also included partners from the Sports for Peace Initiative, represented by Mr. Moataz Salah, head of the initiative, and Ms. Ilham Saad. Additionally, Mr. Michael Tumwesigye, a consultant for Italian humanitarian aid organizations, and H.E. Ambassador Sylvain Astier, the Swiss Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa.
The delegation began its visit by meeting Mr. Emmanuel Tury Agyenda, the Settlement commandant and representative of the Ugandan Prime Minister’s Office (OPM), along with several officials from the (OPM). They also met with leaders of the Sudanese refugee community, including, Mr. Osman Adam Osman – Secretary-General of Refugees, Mr. Osama Abdulrahman – Secretary of Youth and Culture, Mr. Tayeb Elmak – Sports Secretary and Mr. Maawia Al-Hassan – Head of the Community Kitchens Committee.
The delegation conducted a field tour within the Settlement, visiting key sites such as the community kitchen, The medical clinic, Shelters for newly arrived refugees, several critically ill and injured individuals housed in overcrowded reception center tents lacking proper ventilation and hygiene, The World Food Program (WFP) food distribution site and The Give Directly Organization model, which is currently providing support to refugees in the Settlement.
During the visit, the delegation engaged with refugees from various groups, listening to their views and needs. Among those they met were Mr. Taj Elsir Hussein – Secretary of the Elderly Union in the camp, Mr. Mohamed Al-Moayed – Chairperson of People with Disabilities.
The delegation also visited the field office of the Global Refugee Initiatives in Kiryandongo Settlement, a non-governmental humanitarian organization dedicated to assisting refugees, internally displaced persons, and their host communities by increasing access to education, healthcare, justice, and economic opportunities. The organization’s headquarters is in Kampala, Uganda.
During the visit, the delegation witnessed the arrival of (10) buses carrying approximately (400) new Sudanese refugees, leaving a profound impact on the Swiss envoy and the accompanying delegation. This highlighted the immense challenges faced by (OPM) staff, who operate with only five registration stations, struggling to process the increasing number of refugees fleeing the war in Sudan.
The delegation emphasized the urgent need for additional staff, more registration stations, and an improved screening and registration process to ease the suffering of refugees and new arrivals. Many refugees in reception centers expressed frustration at being stuck there for weeks due to bureaucratic delays, underscoring the need for innovative solutions to streamline the process.
In this context, H.E. Ambassador Sylvain Astier reaffirmed that Switzerland has provided millions of dollars in humanitarian aid for Sudanese people both inside Sudan and in neighboring countries since the war broke out. He expressed hope for an end to the conflict and the achievement of peace soon so that refugees can return to their homeland.
The Nubian Center for Peace and Democracy extends its deepest gratitude to The Italian Bishops’ Conference and Caritas Italiana for their continuous support, and H.E. Ambassador Sylvain Astier, Swiss Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, and Mr. Michael Tumwesigye, consultant for Italian humanitarian aid organizations. For dedicating their valuable time, despite their numerous commitments, to visit the camp and assess the refugees’ conditions firsthand. Their visit was warmly received and had a significant positive impact.
Special thanks are also extended to Settlement leadership, particularly Mr. Emmanuel Tury, Settlement Commander and Engineer Hussein Teiman, Head of the Sudanese Refugee Leadership Office, who coordinated the visit and facilitated connections with Settlement leaders.
Sudanese refugees in Kiryandongo Settlement, especially women and children, face extremely difficult humanitarian conditions, including Severe shortages of food and water, leading to worsening malnutrition rates, deteriorating housing conditions, as shelters and tents have been severely damaged by harsh weather, making many uninhabitable, Weak healthcare and education
services, with medical facilities suffering from a shortage of equipment and medical personnel, making it difficult to handle emergencies and provide essential healthcare, especially maternal and child care, Extreme overcrowding, particularly in reception areas for new arrivals, exacerbating the already dire living conditions and straining basic services.
Given these harsh conditions, refugees in Kiryandongo Settlement are in desperate need of immediate humanitarian intervention and additional support from the international community and aid organizations to improve their living and health conditions and ensure a dignified life for them.

برفقة عدد من الشركاء .. زيارة وفد منظمة المركز النوبي للسلام والديمقراطية إلى معسكر كرياندنقو للاجئين.
في إطار جهود المركز النوبي للسلام والديمقراطية الرامية إلى وضع تصور واقعي وتصميم مشروع إنساني بالشراكة مع اللاجئين السودانيين في معسكر كرياندنقو، والذي يهدف إلى تلبية بعض احتياجاتهم الأساسية والسعي لتحسين ظروفهم الاقتصادية والاجتماعية، وبناء على طلب مجلس الكنائس “مؤتمر الأساقفة الإيطاليين” ومنظمة كاريتاس الإيطالية، اللتين تسعيان إلى دعم ومساندة اللاجئين في المعسكر، قام وفد من المركز النوبي للسلام والديمقراطية بزيارة ميدانية لمعسكر كرياندنقو، استمرت يومي الخميس والجمعة، الموافق 13-14 فبراير 2025.
ترأس الوفد الدكتور محمد صالح محمد يس، رئيس مجلس إدارة المركز النوبي للسلام والديمقراطية، ورافقه كل من الأستاذ محمد عبد الله، مدير المركز النوبي، والأستاذ أنس يوسف، والسيد عبد العظيم مصطفى، كما ضم الوفد شركاء من مبادرة الرياضة جسر السلام، ممثلين برئيس المبادرة الأستاذ معتز صلاح، والأستاذة إلهام سعد، إضافةً إلى السيد ميكائيل توموسيجي، مستشار منظمات العون الانساني الإيطالي، والمبعوث السويسري الخاص للقرن الإفريقي، سعادة السفير سيلفان استييه.
استهل الوفد زيارته بلقاء سعادة السيد إيمانويل توري، قائد المعسكر وممثل مكتب رئيس الوزراء الأوغندي، إلى جانب عدد من موظفي(OPM)، كما التقى بقادة مجتمع اللاجئين السودانيين، ومن بينهم، السيد عثمان آدم عثمان، السكرتير العام للاجئين، والسيد أسامة عبد الرحمن، سكرتير الشباب والثقافة، والسيد الطيب المك، السكرتير الرياضي، والسيد معاوية الحسن، رئيس اللجنة العليا للمطابخ المجتمعية بالمعسكر، كما قام الوفد بجولة ميدانية شملت عدة مواقع داخل المعسكر، منها، المطبخ الجماعي، والعيادة الطبية ومخيمات إقامة اللاجئين الجدد، وعدد من المرضى والمصابين إصابات خطيرة قد تؤدي الى فقدان حياتهم، متواجدين في مخيمات مكتظة داخل مقر الاستقبال وتفتقر للتهوية والنظافة، وقد زار الوفد أيضا موقع توزيع الطعام التابع لبرنامج الغذاء العالمي، ونموذج منظمة (Give Directly)، التي تعمل حاليًا على دعم اللاجئين بالمعسكر، وخلال الجولة، التقى الوفد بعدد من اللاجئين من مختلف الفئات، واستمع إلى آرائهم واحتياجاتهم، ومن بينهم السيد تاج السر حسين، سكرتير اتحاد كبار السن بالمعسكر، والسيد محمد المؤيد، رئيس الاشخاص ذوي الإعاقة، واستمع الوفد إلى شهادات مباشرة حول معاناة اللاجئين اليومية والتحديات التي يواجهونها، كما قام الوفد أيضا بزيارة المكتب الميداني للمبادرات العالمية للاجئين بكرياندقو، وهي منظمة إنسانية غير حكومية تعمل في مجال مساعدة اللاجئين والنازحين داخليًا ومجتمعاتهم المضيفة، وتوفر فرصا متزايدة للحصول على التعليم والصحة والعدالة والفرص الاقتصادية، ويقع مقرها الرئيسي في كمبالا، أوغندا.
وشهد الوفد خلال زيارته وصول (10) حافلات تقلّ نحو (400) لاجئ سوداني جديد، مما ترك انطباعا قويا لدى المبعوث السويسري والوفد المرافق، حيث سلط هذا الحدث الضوء على التحديات الكبيرة التي يواجهها موظفو (OPM) في ظل وجود (5) محطات فقط للتسجيل، والتي تعاني من ضغط شديد بسبب الأعداد المتزايدة من اللاجئين الفارين من الحرب في السودان، ويحتاج الى المزيد من الكوادر والمحطات للتسجيل، وإيجاد آلية محسنة في عملية الفحص الأولية والتسجيل مما يساعد في تخفيف معاناة اللاجئين او القادمين الجدد، وقد اشتكى عدد كبير من اللاجئين المتواجدين في مراكز الاستقبال من نكوصهم في المركز لفترات طويلة تمتد لأسابيع، الامر الذي يحتاج الى التفكير في حلول مبتكرة تساعد في معالجة التعقيدات، وفي هذا السياق، أكد سعادة السفير سيلفان استييه أن بلاده قدمت ملايين الدولارات كمساعدات إنسانية للسودانيين داخل السودان وفي دول الجوار منذ اندلاع الحرب، معربا عن أمله في إنهاء النزاع وتحقيق السلام قريبا، حتى يتمكن اللاجئون من العودة إلى وطنهم.
يتوجه المركز النوبي للسلام والديمقراطية بخالص الشكر والتقدير لكل من، مجلس الكنائس ومنظمة كاريتاس الإيطالية لدعمهما المستمر، ولسعادة السفير سيلفان استييه، المبعوث السويسري الخاص للقرن الإفريقي، والسيد ميكائيل توموسيجي، مستشار منظمات العون الإنساني الإيطالي، على تخصيصهما جزءا من وقتهما الثمين، رغم التزاماتهما العديدة، لزيارة المعسكر والاطلاع على أوضاع اللاجئين، وهي زيارة حظيت بترحيب واسع وصدى إيجابي، كما نشكر بشكل خاص قيادات المعسكر، وعلى رأسهم، السيد إيمانويل توري، قائد المعسكر، والمهندس حسين تيمان، رئيس المكتب القيادي للاجئين السودانيين، الذي قام بالتنسيق للزيارة وربط الوفد بقيادات المعسكر.
يعاني اللاجئون السودانيون في معسكر كرياندنقو، وخصوصا النساء والأطفال، من أوضاع إنسانية بالغة الصعوبة، أبرزها، نقص حاد في الغذاء والمياه، مما يزيد من تفاقم معدلات سوء التغذية، وتدهور أوضاع المساكن، حيث تعرضت الخيام والملاجئ لأضرار جسيمة بسبب الأحوال الجوية القاسية، مما جعل العديد منها غير صالح للسكن، وضعف الخدمات الصحية والتعليمية، إذ تعاني المرافق الصحية من نقص حاد في التجهيزات والكادر الطبي، مما يصعب التعامل مع الحالات الطارئة وتقديم الرعاية الصحية الأساسية، خاصة رعاية الامومة والطفولة، والاكتظاظ الشديد أدى إلى تفاقم سوء الوضع المعيشي ونقص الخدمات الأساسية، خاصة في منطقة استقبال اللاجئين الجدد.
وفي ظل هذه الظروف القاسية، يظل اللاجئون في معسكر كرياندنقو بحاجة ماسة إلى تدخلات عاجلة ودعم إضافي من المجتمع الدولي والمنظمات الإنسانية لتحسين أوضاعهم المعيشية والصحية وضمان حياة كريمة لهم.
